Two Ugly Men
The Duc de Roqnelaure ws a man of great ugliness and inuch humor. One day he met in the street a most unlovely looking Auvergnat, who had soine petition or memorial to present at Versailles. He immediately introduced him to Louis XIV, remarkiug that he was under a special obligation to him. The king grarted the favor asked for j and then inquired of the duc what might be the nature of the obligation. "But for him, your majesty, I should be the ugliestman in yoar dominions!" I am reminded of Heidegger, the I manager of the opera house in the Hayinarket when George II was king. j One day he laid a wager with the Earl I of Chesterfield that he would not find in all London an uglier face than his. : After a long search the earl produced i a woman of 'St. Giles' who at first seemed tooutvie the manager, but when the latter put on the woman's headgear his superior ugliness was at once mitted.
