Shelby, April 10. - A terrible accident happened near here Monday that vvill carry desolatiou to many happy homes. At 11 o'clock in the morning vvhile a logging loeouiotive was run uiug on the narrow guage road ol Staples & Covell, near New Esau, Oceana connty, it struok a tree tha had been blown across the railroac track by the recent high winds, anc without a moinent's warning seven uien met an awful fate. When the train struck the obstruction the engine was thrown from the rails and went rolling down an einbankinen t, taking with it a number of logging care, which all piled upon it. It was a terrible scène. When the train went over the embankment the whole crew, consisting of eight men, went with it. They were pinned down by the logging cars and crushed to death. To add to the awful sufferings of the imprisoned men they were scalded by escapiug steam. It was some time before any help arrived and when it did seven men were dead. six of whose names are as follows A. SHELANDER, engineer. UUS ANDERSON, fireman. MAKTJN LYNCH. FRANK SHIPPKY. ALLKN CHI'rCliKTT. EMEBY STEARNS. The three last were single men, al! the ethers were uiarried and had families. Fred Chalker, married, was fatally injured.
