The democratie convention to name a candidate for congress in the second district has been called to meet in Adrián, September n. The republican pharisees who seem so distressed over the alliance between the senatorial "conservatives" and the sugar trust, have had the power and the opportunity for weeks of giving the people free sugar and the trust a black eye. Why have they not availed themselves of the opportunity? Why did they not vote solidly for the Murphy resolution against any further "contested legislation? " For the simple reason that underneath their phanseeism they wear the collar of the sugar monopoly. The sugar trust holds the title to them in fee simple. For proof see McKinley bill with its one-half cent a pound tax for the benefit of the infamous monopoly. Woe unto you sugar trust pharisees! At the head of this page will be found the cali for the democratie county convention. This convention will name the county ticket and delegates to the democratie congressional convention which will meet ín Adrián on September n. A duty will devolve on this convention upon the judicious performance of which will largely depend the hopes of democratie success this f all. It is the duty of every democrat, therefore, to attend his party primaries and assist in discovering the wishes of the rank and file of the party, that those wishes may be faithfully represented in and carried out by the convention. There should be no vacancies in the representation of any ward or township. This gathering should be thoroughly representative of the dominant party of the county and imbued with that enthusiasm which presages success. There is no reason why the democrats should not throw their usual majority in the approaching elections, provided every democrat goes to the polls and performs his duty. But there must be no stay at home. Hon. Thomas E. Barkworth, of Jackson, was in the city Wednesday, and rumor says he was looking over the congressional field with the view of becoming a candidate for the democratie nomination, vided the situation seemed inviíing. j Mr. Barkworth has represented his district in the lower house of the state legislature the past two sessions where he did valiant service for the democracy. The ability he displayed and his faithful attendance upon his duties, even at the expense of his private business, won for him the respect of the democracy of the state generally, and he carne to be regarded as a man of much promise. Recent utterances of his have, unfortunately, placed him at variance with a large portion of the democracy of the district. The Argus would not imply, as many intímate, because it believes Mr. Barkworth too broadminded a man to be influenced by such motives, that these utterances were inspired by personal pique because of his failure to secure a government appoinment. However, there is a strong feeling abroad that the democrat who would represent this district in congress at the present time, should be in harmony with all measures for the proper carrying out of government obligations and the faithful execution of the laws. The democrats of the second district would not give the most enthusiastic support to a candidate whose utterances on important issues have not tended to promote that harmony in the party which is so essential to democratie success. The second district interests can be better taken care of by a democrat who is in sympathy with the democratie administration.
