Buffalo, Sept. rt.- General George Stoneman, ex-governor of California, died in this city yesterday morniiig at the residence of his sister, Jira Benjamin H. Williams. George Stoneman was born in Busti, Chautauqua county, N. Y., Avig. 8, 1S8SL He was graduated Ht the United Statfs -Military .ici.lemy in 1SW. In Ftbruary ol that. yeiir he refused to obey the orders of bis superior, General David E. Twiiigs, for tlie surreuder of the governnunt property to the seceasionist, evacuaied the fort and went to New York by steainer. He beemne major of tbe flrst cavalry on Muy 9, 18B1, aud iserved in western Virginia tili Ana. 13, wheu he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and chief of cavHlry of the Aroiy of the Potomac. He orgauized the cavalry of that army, and commauded it during the Virginia peninsular campaigu of }86'i He rose to the rank of major general of volunteers, and did eplendid service in many of the battles in Virginia. Grant gave him a cavalry corps in Ibö4, and on a raid for the capture of Andersouville Stoneman was captured and held from July to October, af ter which he served in Virginia and East Tennessee. In the regnlar army he was colonel and brevet-major general. He retired in 1871, aud in 1683 was elected goveruor of California as a Democrat.
