Charies Chauvin, an old and wealthy land hermit of Grosse Point, reported to be worth a quarter of a million, yet living in an old tumbledown log hut, was recently murdered, and the perpetrators of the bloody deed, escaped. The murder was accomplished by hacking the old man's skull open with an axe, his arms having first been bound with stout cords. Tuesday, Deputies Chris. Brenner and James Murray arrested James Hoganer, a stranger of suspicious appearance, who was in the city. He begged a pair of trousers and repairing to an out-house on Forest street, discarded those he had worn, and putting on the garment of charity, threw the cast-offs into the vault, from whence they were afterward resurrected. An examination of the pockets disclosed a certified ticket showing the man to be a member of the Buffa.o Marine Firemen's Beneficiary association. There were also blood stains on the pantaloons. It was deeraed best to hold Hoganer a few days, and he is resting in ja.il.
