The republican papers and speakers in this state seek to make it appear that they are perfectly confident, absolutely sure, of an overwhelming victory in the coming election. They ridicule any suggestion of the possibility of defeat. Now, for men who are so sure of anything as these republicans claim to be of triumph in Michigan, the most extraordinary steps are taken, the most remarkable efforts made. Rarely, if ever, in a presidential campaign have the republicana of Michigan put forth so great efforts as are manifested at this time, when they profess to believe that no special effort is necessary. In every congressional district and in every county there is an appearance of that sort of doubt concern the prospects whieh manifests itself in desperate efforts to keep up an appearance of confidence. The most eminent spsakers among the republicans of the country are imported into Michigan and the most desperate efforts are made to produce a showing of hope. The fact is the demócrata have their opponents on the run, and there is a splendid prospect of running thein into defeat.
