Bbakil, Ind., Nov. 89. - A partly suocessful attempt was made last night to blow up tho new No. 1 shaft of the Brazil Bloek Coal company, just north of the city. A numbor of men were at work down the shaft and several in the rear of the ongine room when there was a deafening report and a sheet of flame shot from between the boiler walls. Tho oocupants wero thrown to the ground by the sliock, but fesovered in time to escape before the flames reached them. ïlio ejigine house and boiler rooms were consuiued, but the flre proof paint protectod the shaft house until the flre departmont arrived. The fiamos in the engine room cut off tho cage in the mine. The men down there oscapcd by tho ladder, but had the flames gotten in the shaft house they would have been riiist:xl. After thefirethe basket in which the crude bomb had been placed was foi:nd between the boiler walls. The Company offers a reward for the capture of the perpotrators. The loss is $3,500.
