The extreme politeness of the average English waitei' is a continual sourco of merrinieiit. He thanks you when ho brings yonr soup, again when he briugs yonr uapkin, wiieQ Ijo takes away your plate, whun bo happuus to flnd you lookiug at hiiu - in f act, he says, "Thankyou, " at every turn, aud says it in such a jerky, meohanica) fashion that you cannot repress a sniile. His exaruple is followed by the bus conductor, wbo thanks yon for your t'are and thaaks you agaiu wheu he hands you your ticket, and by the theater usher whcu he suats j-ou, and by every Servant you meet, in tlio most inappropriate rnannor.
