St. Petersburg, Jan. 18.- Nicolás Carlovitoli lc Giers, a Russian statesman of Swedish origin who diod Saturday night, was born May í), 18U (old style). He was educntcd in the Imperial Lyceum at Zurskojo, Seloe, and when IS years old entered the Asiatic department of tho ministry of foreign affairs. Aug. 1, 18ö3, he was made ambassador extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary at Teheran, where he remained until 18(59. From tho conclusión of the treaty oL Berlin De Giers was tho chief guardián of the foríign interests of Russia. April, 1882, on (he rctiroment of Princo Gortschakolï he tvas advanoed to the post of minister of foreign affairs. M. de Giers married the Princess Kancakuzeno, who was the niece of Prince Sortschakoff. M. de Giers had for years uffered from a sluggisli liver and a consequent rheumatic affection. Last i vember he seemed on the point of dying and it was reportod that he had rosigncd ! in consequenco. He recovered, however, j only partially, was able to sign the i riage contract of the present czar and ' Princess Ahx of Hesse, but he never j gained his health and his illness ed him from acquiring influence ovor the ! present czar. Mme. de Giers died many years ago. A son has served his country with honor as a diplomat.
