1. - "Do yon prefer .single walled or doublé walled hives? 2. - WhjT your preference?' ' Thü foregoing queries were reoently asked and answered m The .American Bee Journal. Twenty six responses were made. Eighteen of these, favored the single hive as being just as good, costing lesa and beiug lighter to haudle. Several successfnl beekeepers, however, pave preference to tbe doublé walled hive. W. M. Bauman Baid: "1. My preference is sligbüy toward the doublo walled hiva 3. It ives more even temperatnre the year aronnd. Jt affords more protectiou in antnrun and winter," Dadnnt & Son gave preíerence to double walled hives, or two thicknesses, bufc not ohafl ni ves., J. H. Larrafee replied: "1. Doublo walled. 2. Because they can be more suocessfully winfered and keep cooler in .sumnicr. " Mrs. J. N. Heater Baid: "1. Doublé walled. They are warmer in winter and rooier in summer. The comb.s do not melt down even vh n the hives stand in the sun, and the bees will not cluster on the outside of the hives so badly. " Mrs. Jennio Atchley, Texas, wrote: "1. In this extreme southern clime I prefer single walled hives, as they are lighter. 2. Doublé walls are more ejfpeusive, butlhave often thought of trying doublo walled hives with a dead air space to see if it would not be a proteotion agaiust heat. I have bees in brick walled hives that seem very comfortable iu hot weather, and a brick hive migbt be good for a winter hive in cold climates. " James A. Stone answered: "1. I prefer single walled. 2. Thoy aro cheaper and lighter to hand Ie, and as for wintering advantages of the doublé walled I should put them in the cellar anyway, and tbe single wall does well there. " C. H. Difl'ern's answer was: "1. Single walls every time. 2. They are cheaper and lighter to handle. If yon intend packingboes outdoors for winter, use an outer case. ' ' G. L. Tincker said: "1. I prefer a single walled bive and winter cases. A doublé walled hivo is a poor bive to winter bees in. I have not made doublé walled hives for years. They are out of date. 2. The single walled hive is easy to manipúlate and saves labor. "
