When Scanlan heard of the llckloness of his betrothed and the porfldy of hisfriend he refused to believo it, and not until a copy of the iuarringo certifícate was shown him would he bu couWnced. He then registered a solemn vow that he would kill Krank Mead as soon as he secured his liberty. Frank Mead is believed to have been formerly assooiated with a noted ci-iminai named O'Brien in many burglarie8 committed in Hyde Park. O'Brien was killed by a policoman and then Mead is said to have jolned himself to the oanlan gang. It is very doubtful, however, Í Scanlan will be afforded an opportiinity of earrying out his thrnat. Ol her crimes are laid at his door for which he will have to answec before he regains his full liherty. One of these is the murder of Offieer O'Brien, committed In 1887. Afterhis incarceration in Joliet ricanlan made a written confeasion of this murder, and it is now proposed to make hini answer for it. The oonfession was made under peculiar cirrumstances. Hu had not been suspected of tlie crime. One ïimothy Grady was aocused of it, arrested, tried and convicted, and genteneed to twen Uve years' impiisonment in Joliet. When Grady reached the penltentiary Soanlan was believed to be dytng of consumption. It was not thought he oould live to finish his seutence, and so a confession was obtained froni him by means of which a pardon for (irady was secured from Governor Fifer. Hhould he escape froni that charge through some technicality of the law tiiere are four other ruurders for which he will havo to answer. John McMahon, treasurer of a división of the Ancient Order of HibernianB, was killed at his homo at Thirty-ninthand Liaurel streets. He is believed to have been one of Scanlan's vlctims Another was Uwen Miller, a saloon-keeper on Archer avenue, who was killed while trying to protect his place froni a raid of burglars. The other two were employés of the Panhandle road named Hanlon and Caflsidy. Hcanlon has been a criminal all his life. He was convicted of robuery afc the ago of IR.
