The town was aroused by the report of flre arins and inveatigation revealed the fact that a party of white ïuen had begun flring on the negroes assem bied to do tho work on the mili. Tiie negroes wero notifled by the white men to leavo town in üfteen minutes. They rofused to obey the order and the shooting commenced. The ne groes fled to the swamps, where thoy remained all niglit. They retumed in the morning, however, and went to work.
