New York, April 15 -James W. Scott, proprietor ol the Chicago Tlmes-Herald and the Chicago Evening Post, died yesterday aftornoon at 3 o'clock at the Holland house, this city. Hls death was very sudden. He was taken with pains in the left side in the morning and a doctor was called. He said the pain arose from the passage of a stone from the bladder, and administered morpliine. At 1 o'clock Mr Scott became unconsciou8, and the doctor was hastily summoned again. He found that apoplexy had supervened, probably brought on from the pain, and Mr. Scott died without reeovering consciousness. Mrs. Scoct and a little nieoo were the only relatives with liim. Great Shock to Mis Krionds. The news of Mr. Scott's doath spread quickly and was a great shock to his frionds in the city and from the west who happened to be in New York. Many called and sent to Mr3. Scott thfilr condolonco and expressions of deep sympathy. Among those who caüed were Ambrose Butler, Jamos S Metcaïf (of Life), Walter Dunham, Amos P. Handy aud John E. Wilkie, who returned from London Saturday. Captain John Allen, U. S. N., said that he was never more shocked than when he heard of Mr. Scott's death. He considered that his loss to Chicago would be irreparable. He had an immense influence in political and municipal affairs and invari&bly did what was right. Hetald Always on the Outsiite. "I was ac che Wraldorf with him last night," said Mr. Alien. "Mr. Scott never appeared in better spirits. I asked him why ho called the Consolidated newspaper tho Times-Herald. "He said, laughinf?: 'When the paper is folded tho word Times will be on the inside and the ñamo Herald will always appear on the outside.' Mr. Scott was a dear, good man, and I shali miss him moro than I can tell. " Airangeineuts for the Funeral. The funeral will take place in Chicago, but no date has as yet been fixed. Mr. Scott's body will be eonveyed to that city this afternoon by the West Shore limited The newspaper men of this city wiH make arraugements to escort the body to that city. They will hold a meeting today to complete armngements. James W. Scott was born in Walworth cuunty, Wis., in Juno, 1849, and started the Chicago Herald in 18S1, making it in a oomparatively short timo a phenomenal success. He was known all over the country, and the editorial columns of tho newspapers all testify to the estimation in which he was hc.ld.
