A large imdieuce assembled to witness the graduating exercises of the St. Thomas' high school, Tuesday evening. The hall was prettily . decorated with the class eolors of blue and white. The graduating class of five youug ladies consisted of Miases May Clarken, Lizzie Fitchell, Victoria Fohey, Gertrude Kress and Clara O'Hearn. The essays read were of a high grade Miss Victoria Fohey 's subject was Here and Therc in Hope, and she pointed out how hope bids us emulate the grand masterpieces in literature, mnsio and art. Miss Gertrude Kress read au essay on Roman Character aud dwelt at length on its different phases,its early symplicity, its imperial magnificence and itá final decline. Miss May Clarken's subject was A. ü-lance at Republics, and she contrasted tlie various governments much to the credit of the United States. She bore down on the Italian genius for government. . Miss Clara O'Heam in her essay on. American Cb araeter ir tanced the eharacter of Washington, Atlarus, Jefferson, ' Franklin, Longfellow, Bryaut, Haw thorne and Iiiviug and claimed that the American character is more than auy other endowed with siruplicity, liberality, intense patriotism and earnestuess. Miss Lizzie Fitchell delivered a wel] written and touohiuK valedictory. Rev. Frank Kennedy, of Ypsiianti, delivered an excellent conmiencement address ou the subject of Good Reading. The 'programme was interspersed with excellent music and the graduates were the recipients of niany elegant presents.
