The second annual session of the University summer school opened last Monday with the most fiattering prospecte. There are already two hnndred studeuts on hand . The session will continue six 'weeks. A number of prominent educators from other states are here to take up advanced work. Among them beiug Professor William McCracken, professor of physics and chemistry in Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa. , who is doing special advanced work in biology. Professor DeBar, professor of physics and chemistry in Oklahoma University is stndying here as is also Professor McAndle, professor of matheniatics in North Dakota State University and Professor A. J. Howard, colored, professor of mathematics and astronomy in a Mississippi college. There are also a number of city superintendents of schools of Michigan in attendance, among them the following : Supt. William Bellis of Quincy who has spent several summers at the Cornell summer school, Supt. J. R. Miller of Big Rapids, Supt. L. J. Leisenring of Sturgis, Snpt. Biscome and wife of Cassopolis and the superintendent and several teachers from Nashville. The preseuce of such people indicates that the reputation of the summer school is widening and that these prominent educators consider it a place where they may get valué received for their time and money expended. All this seems to iniply that the summer school is now established on a firni basis and that it is destined to beoome an important and popular educational factor. There is no conceivable reason why it shouid not or why it shouid not become equally as valuable and successful as those in other sections of the country. There is a constantly growiug demand for summer schools and Ann Arbor shouid not an evidently does not intend to be backward about takiug a leading position in this respect as it does in all otber educational matters. The oourses of fered this season are various aud strong and are under the diection of experiened teachers, aud henee ie opportuuities for advanced work and esearch are first class. In addition to the regular work, arangeinents have been made for a series f popular lectures by President Angelí, Professors Hinsdale, Demmon, Kelsey, homas, Carhart and others. If the flrst week is any testiftatiou to judge froin, the success of the session is assured.
