Rockford, 111., Aug. 29.- Thare cama near being a riot over the Royal Mantel factory strike on Seventh street last night. A man standing on the corner was recognized as one of those who bad taken a striker's place, and immediately a cry of "scab" went up. The man started to walk away, but a crowd of several hundred strikers quickly gathered and started on a chase after him. One of the crowd struck an offlcer, and then the bluecoats pulled their guns and threatened to shoot. Then the trouble ceased. Later in the evening the crowd on Seventh street, whlch was an immense one, became troublesome, shouting "Scabs!" and attacking and insulting passers-by. A riot cali was sent in to the pĆ³lice department, which brought out a dozen offlcers. Nine of the strikers were arrested. An extra force of offlcers has been placed on that beat and the crowd has diapersed.
