Beetboveu had a voice so coarse and harsh that once, conductiug a reliearsal, when he attempted to hum a passage for the 'cello to show how it should go, an iuvoluutary roar of laughter came froni the orchestra. He turned very red, but afterward hiruself laughed, and the incident passed 011 pleasantly.
