At the meeting of the board of public works held last night Inspector Ward submitted his report! ou brick eiosswalks. ïhere have been buiit seven of these walks under his supervisión at an average cost of $76.55 per walk. The places they were laid and tihe respective cost of each is as follows: Detroit st. at Kmgsley, $86.47; Main st. at Kingsley, $63,21; Kingsley st. al Main, $62.15; Ashley st. at .Huron, $124.42: State st. at Lawrence, $37.40; Ann st. at Fourth ave., $90.26; Fourth ave. at Ann st., $63.97. The average cost per yeard is $2.63 witli the curb and $2.14 without the curb. It will be seen by the above figures that the cost per walk widely differs, which is accounted for in tl size of the walk and also the kind of a foundation. The first brick walk was that on Ashley st. at Huron., which cost $124.42, buti this walk was an exceedingly large one and experimental as to the quality of material to be üsed and therefore ■ ineured some unnecesu ry expense. It will be safe to say, however, that in the future these brick erosswalks can br laid at a cost of not' more than $2 per yard. ünr reason for this is that the expert bricklayer from Detroit can be dispenned with and where he was paid $3.50 perd ay a $2.50 per day man can do tèe work.
