On Tuesday John R. Miaer and Attorney Nori-is came bofore the board of supervisors in favor of a resolntion empoweriner Chairman Lighthall to appoint a committee of five with whoni ex-Treasurer Paul G. Suekey and his attorneys might consult with the purpose of reaching some settlement in regard to the Stiekey defalcation. This resolution was to empowersuoh cominittee to settle with Suekey on snch as basis as this: Suekey has $3,000 whioh he desires to pay over, and this is the minimum sum that the cominittee shall be anthorized tu receive. For the difference between this sum and the $4,100 which Suekey is accused of embezzling, Suekey's bondsmen are still held. Mr. Miner, in his support ot the resolutiou, said that Mr. Suekey had no idea of the valué of money, being brought up in Germany on a larpe estáte, that he returned from Europe and sulimitted to arrest in spite of the solicitaton of his friends not to do so. The latter act was characteristic of the real honesty of the man. Another phase was also pressed home to the supervisors. If Mr. Suekey was allowed to use the $3,000, all the money he possessed, to help settle accounts with the couuty, ;hi3 money would not be used by hirn in the defence he would be forced to make if the criminal charge now impeudíng should he be pushed by the Drosecuting attorney at the board's soicitation The resolution was discusfied to some extent, but it was finally decided to adjourn action upon it until t.Vie followiuEr dav. The matter was again called up for discussion on Weduesday, but after considerable talk nothing detinite was done except that the general impression was showu that no sum should bementioned in the resolution. Yesterday the following resolation was introduced by Snpervisor Davenport : Resolved, That a cornmittee of five rnerobers of the board be appointed by the chairman ; that such committee be invested with power and authoriy in their discretion to settle. adjust and oompromise the liability of Panl (í. Provided, however, that this resolution or any act of such committee shall not be construed to release the said Paul G. Snekey or any of his bondsmen from their liability to the county nntil snoh sum so agreed upon as a compromise shall have been pdd in fnll.
