Governor Ashley's lecture before the Unity club Monday eveuiri,' was one of the finesc by common conse ,t ever given in Ann Arbor. It was in ev ry way a remarkabïe lecture. The ter, eness of its style, the power of its thougut aud the vigor of its delivery snrpriserl the audience and especially those friends who realized The age of the governor and the fact that he is just recoveriug from a long and painful ilinVss. Governor Ashley was an intímate frienrl aud social compauion of Mr. Lincoln, and he was able to briug bis andienoe into touch with the curious persomdity of the grean president as no persou not intímate with hiin could do. As haudled by Governor Ashley in his splenrtid lectnro LídcoIu seems to come back to aartu aud talk with us, telling us bis inimitable stories of the awful respousibilities which rested upou bim, aud revealiug to us all the lights aud shaciows. all the joys and sorrow.which made up hís strange and incomparable character. This lecture of Governor Ashley should be repeated in every city of the country. It wiil interest the old, it will rucall to the middle aged in livid colors, the events of the greatstrnggleto iraservotho honor and integvity of our country and inspire young men with a new euthusiasm for offloial integrity and unselfish patriotism. A volume has lately been pub lished containing some of the speeches and addresses delivered by him in hi early mauhood aud when he was active in public life. It contains nothing mor fiuished as a literary producton or mor vigorous in stylo or more elegant in thought than the lecture upon Abraham Lincoln.
