Census bulletin No. 10 has been isued. It relates to illiteracy and it oonains some interesting facts concerning nis county, as well as the state. The number of illiterate persons in the state 0 years oíd or older, June 1, 1894, aruounted to 95,037 a very large city ;hat would rnake, 70, 772 of whom oould neither read nor write and 24,365 of whom could read but could not write. ?he number of illiterate persons had eoreased 877 since 1890 and there were 6,176 less than were returned in 1884. 'he numebr returned in 1884 was 7,490 more than were returned in 880. Of the total number aged 10 nd over returned in the present oensus s unabJe to read or write 24,660 were native born, and 46,112 foreign born. Of the natives 13,280 had native parnts, while 6,983 had foreign born parnts, while 2,508 had one parent native and the other foreign born. Of the otal number returned as able to road iut not able to write, 10,613 were native and 13,653 were foreign born. 'he number of native inhabitants of be state 10 years old and over is reurned at 1,181,368. The number of hese unaWe to read or write was 4,660, or 21 in eaoh thousand. The woportion of illiterate foreign born s four times the proporton of the jative. The total male population in he state aged 21 years and over was 51,920, of whom 34,545 cannot read or write. This is 53 persons to every housand in the state. The uative male population of voting age is 393,225, of whom 10,877 caiinot read or vrite. The foreign born male populaion of voting age is 258,695, of whom 23,668 oannot read or write. The proportion of native males of voting ages who caunot read or write is 2.77 ier cent or 28 in each thousand, and of 'oreign born, 9115 per cent, or 92 iu each ouo ihousand. In the county of Washtenaw the native iuhabitants 10 years old and over number 27,940, of wbom 293 are nnable to read or write and 99 of whom are able to read but unable to write. The number of foreign bom inhabitants 10 years old and over was ennmerated in the county as 7,632, of whom 891 were unable to read or write and of whom there were 132 able to read but unable to write. Washtenaw's percentage of native born inhabitants unable to read or write was 1.05, of the foreign born 3.81. The only counties having smaller percentages of native born citizens uuable to read or write were Barry with .98, Calhoun .95, Hillsdale .96, Kent .78. Jackson nearlv ties with 1.06. Anu Arbor city has native inhabitants over 10 years old to tbe number of 6,818. Of this number 16 are unable to read or write, and 12 able to read but unable to write The foreign born inhabitants ten years old and older number 2,384, 53 of whom are unable to read or write and 20 of whom are able to read but unable to write. Ypsilanti bas 4,249 native inhabitants 10 years old and over of whom 77 are unable to read or write and 16 able to read but uuable to write. The foreign born of the stated age number 9(i6, of whom 63 are unabie to read or write and 15 of whom are able to read but unable to write.
