Thore is no doubt that the nevr ■woman appeared in the west long before ehe mad her flrat bow to the public in the east. Years ago Mrs. Ann Casier of Yolo county, Cal., wanted a home of her owd, and, not knowing any other way to get it, 8he ■went to work and built it herself. She secured a claim on Vashon island, in Pnget sound, and, without any one to help her, built a complet log house. At that time the island was a stubborn wilderness, so that to even clear a plaoe to build was a gigantic undertaking. But notbing daunted Mrs. Casier. After sawing, hewing and flattening the loga for her house she managed to moye them in place by a unique method. Gathering a quantity of ferus she proceeded to chew them info a pulp. Aiter this was done ehe put the slippery mass of pulp under the logs and then moved thern with comparativo ease. She plastered the house by throwing on the piaster with her hands and then smoothed it down with a.caseknife. The entira house was built in just 14 days. It is still standing in the center of Vashon island, and its ownerand builder, Mrs. Casier, makes her living by the product of the soil about her home. She bas carefully cultivated the land, and has thriving orchards of plurus, prnnes and pears, besides & garden full of old faehioned flowers. She also own a number of cows and a brood of chickens, which help to swell her income. Mrs. Casier will soon celébrate her seventy-sixth birthday. - New "ïork World. Mre. Vaughan Davie and Mrs. Humpheys Owens, whose husbands are menibers of parliament, have heen elected oa the court of the University college of Wales.
