Denver. Jan. 30 -The mystery of the big expresa robbery committed la i radoSprings the night of Nov. 11, 1895, ! may be cleared up now, as tho secret service department of the Fargo pany's express has causod the arrest of ' two men who the oompany thinks conspirad to secure and make away with the money. The flrst arrest was inade Monday afternoon as the Union Paciflc. Denver and Gulf south-bound train wa9 passing through Walsenburg. Coló., when a man named Krout was taken irom the train by Sheriff Parr of Huérfano county at the request of W B Sayres, a Pinkerton detective, who had followed Krout from Colorado Springs. The second arrost occurred Tuesday night when Gaorge Krout, formerly express agenc tor the Wells-Fargo company, was taken into custody at nis home in Colorado Springs. Krout, the eider is a farmor who lived for years near Cerro Gordo, Ills , and only arvied in Colorado Jan 21. Whon arrested he told the oflioers in Walsen burg that his name was Sam Jones and that he was on his way to Fort Worth Tex., to which place he had a ticket. Money Sewed to Kis Shirt. He was searebed and $4,60;) in cash found on his person. of which 4,300 was sewed to the lnside of the shirt. In tho ordinary black grip which he carried was found $160 moro, and S140 was brought to light rolled up in a shirt. George Krout in Colorado Springs had nothing to say. The robbery was committed at the Santa Fe depot in Colorado Springs about 10 o'clock, just after express tram No. 6from Denver had passed by. The story told by Agent Krouc was that he was overpowered by two masked men before he had time to put away money pack ages containing $35,000. As Krout had been in the employ of the Wells-Fargo express company for a number of years suspicion did not at first attach to hiru. He told a very plausible story, and it was believed, in spite of the face that the bery was reported by him to have takeil place at a time when the station platform was full of people. Ha said the men had hid in the office while ho was looking af ter the express matter that came off the train, and two masked men faced him I when he entérod. ïhey closed the door and locked it, made him deliver the money, and then at themuzzle of a pistol, ordered him to get into bed and cover up his head. There was u cot iu the office, anti the agent said he did as the robbers ordered, but that he gave the alarm as soon as they were off. liloodhoiuids were engaged to : follow the trail of the supposod robbers, but the scent was lost in the busy streeta of the city. Search was made f or a supposed band of crimináis who had been previously operating in the Cripple Creek district, but finally the pursuit seemed to have been abandoned. The eider Krout arrived in Colorado Springs Jan. 21 f rom Cerro Gordo, Hls., and as he was frequently seen in consulcation wifch the express agent in out-of-the-way places he has been constantly shadowed. Tuesday, when he boarded the train at Colorado Springs, the detectives ot on to keep him company and flnd out something about his affairs and %vhere ho was going, with the result above mentioned. Soon after the robbery G-eorge Krout left his position, but it is not known whether he was discharged or not. He i an unmarried man under 30. He carne to Colorado from Tft-7n.fi.
