A Philadelphia man was arrested on a warrant, charged with assault and battery on his wife, and was taken to the central station for a hearing. His wife, on her oath, said he beat her so badly that she was detained in bed two days. When Magistrate South asked him why he had beuten his wife, the prisoner said, "Well, jndge, yon see, I opened the door and threw iny hat inside to see if it would b welcoined, and when she threw it out I was so raad that I weut inside and licked her."
