As respecta charaoter, the British and American publics are striking ly at one. The tone of popular sentiment is mnch tho same. The attitude toward questions oí general human interest is often identical. Political ideáis are, at bottom, not so unlike as superficial observers fancy. Party spirit manifests itself in very similar fashion. Both are sensitive, tbough in slightly varying degrees, t.o the same appeals. The same national spirit animates both, showing itself in quite characteristio fashion wben the jealousy of one is aroused against the other. Indeed it is in their mutual rivalries and jealousies that their spiritual kinship is often most manifest. Their diversity is superficial and provincial ; their unity fundamental and racial.
