Greenbacks Taxable In Illinois
Sprisufield, July %.- In reply to the query, "Are greenbacks taxable under the revenue lawa of this state?" Assistant Attornej' General Newell has reudered an opinión holding that they are. He says: '"Formerly greenbacks were not taxable but under the act of congress, passed Aug. 13, 1894, all circulating notes of national banking associations, United States tender notes and certiflcates of the United States payable on deniand and circulating or intending to circuíate as currency and gold, silver or other coin, are subject to taxation as money on hand or on deposit under the laws of the states and territorios. Under this act greenbacks are certainly taxable."
