Edward R. E. Coweil, aged 51, of. Ypsilanti, ana Miss Lizzie Skinner, aged 45, of Chicago, were arrested early Satnrda.v inorning at Eaton Rapids, by Detectives Dowuey and Tuttle, of Detroit, on the charge of adultery. The complaint was made by Mra. A. S. Cowell of 216 Maple st., Ypsilanti, who says that she is the wife of Cowell. tíbe charges the couple with liviug together as man and wife at a boarding house at 32 Jones st. , Detroit. Coweil, who is 53 years old, rnoved to Ypsilauti 15 years ago. He was for five years connected with the Wagner Car Co. and for eiglt years afterwards accountant in the car departiuent of the Michigan Central at Detroit. He was promiuently identified with the Ypsilanti Congregational ohurch, being deaoan and superintendent of the Suuday school. He was elected alderman of the fourth ward, Ypsilanti, on the repnblicau ticket six years ago, and was the unly republicau alderman iu that ward for the last 34 years. Since leaviug the Michigan j Central he has beea located in several places. Mrs, Coweil says her hnsband, about a year ago, went to Des Moines, Iowa, and began pubilshing a magazine called the Earth. Mrs. Coweil went to Des Moines unexpected by her husband and found that Miss Lizzie Skinner and he roomed at the same house wth adjoining doors but could find no proof of anything wrong, Mr, Coweil ulaiming Miss Skinner to be his typewriter. Mrs. Coweil says that Miss Skinner left Des Moines and went to Mrs. Cowell's house, in Ypsilanti, Mr. Coweil sendiug word to ïaake it pleasant for Miss Skinner. Coweil followed her. She stayed with Mrs. Coweil two weeks. Mr. Coweil remained home five weeks, during which time he locked himself in bis room at night, and she saw but very little of him. This was last July. Coweil and Miss Skinner left Ypsilanti at the same time, aocording to his wife's story, and carne to Detroit, where they lived, and it was there that Mrs. Coweil claims she got positive proof of the charge sbe makes against her husbaud. Mrs. Coweil owns 'her home and three years ago put au $800 rnortgage on it at the solicitation of her husband to pay his debts. Mrs. Coweil is poor and has supported berself and family by makiug bread and selling flowers. She says she has evidence that Coweil and Miss Skinner have been together for the past three years, flrst at Wooster, Mass., and in several places siuce. Mrs. Coweil is the mother of nine children, four of whom are living. One sou, aged 26, is an optician iu Chicago. Three girls, aged 22, 11 and 7, live at home. Thfi esamination of the adulterous couple will be held in Detroit today.
