Dr. Edward Batwell, of Ypsilanti, bad a very narrow esoape from what might have resnlted in bis death Thnrsday of last week, and it veas ouly bis quiokness of aotion wihch saved bim. The doctor has a hydraulic ram at Hignlaud oemetery which is usedfor foroius water up to spriukle his burial lot. The ram becaroe stopped up and he went there to repair it. Whiïe Dusily eugaged he happened to notice a rattlesnake directly behind him. The serpent was coiled up and the very instant it was discovered it was ready to spring at the doctor and fasten its deadly faugs on bim. Quicker tban a flash the doctor strnck the snake with a hammer which he had in his hand and lnckily sncoeeded in hitting the reptile on the head and killing it. Dr. Batwell's partial deafness prevented his hearing the nsual warning given by snakes of this species and it was by ;he ïnerest chance that he discovored its presence. The snake measured three feet long and had five rattles which the doctor has preserved to snbstantiate his story.-
