The spines are veiy loosoly attached to the poreupine, and they are very sharp - as sharp as a needie at the outer end. At almost the slightest touch they penétrate tho nose of a dog or the clothing or flesh of a porson touching the porcupine and stick there, coming away from the animal without any pull being required. The facility in catching hold svith one end and letting go with the I other has eometimes oaused people to tliink that the spines had been thrown at theni. Tho outer end of the spines, forsome distance down, iscovered with small barbs.
