Through the efforts of W. K. Childs' pension agenoy, John H. Davis, the well known old colored man, familiarly known as "Jeff," bas at length heen granted the back pay due him as a soldier in the war of the rebellion. For 20 years Mr. Davis has been trying to oollect this pay and at different periods Cougressman Willetts, Allen and Eldredge endeavored to seonre the money for him, but the claim was always disallowed by the treasury department, as his war record oould not be proved to ite satisfaction. When the lOth U. S. Colored Infantry was mustered out of service Mr. Davis was uot present, beiug absent on detailed duty procorring recruits and arresting deserters. Mr. Davis was granted a pension of $12 a month some time ago, and since tbat time Mr. Childs has agaiD been at work to get his back pay for him. Through Mr. Childs' argumenta, tbat the bnrdeu of proof that the pay was uot due Mr. Davis lay with the treasury department, and that if be had been paid there would be a record of it on the books, a thorough search was made. It resulted in flnding tbat no reoord of suoh a payment conld be fonnd and the secretary of the treasury ordered that the money, amounting to nearly $350, be paid over to Mr. Davis.
