While prospecting ucar Death valley, iu Arizona, a rniuer and his friend discovered the dead body of a horse which had been lying for some time upon the crude borax deposits. As they were nearly dying froin thirst, they cut into the flesh in order to moisten their lips with the blood. Muoh to their surprise, they found that both flesh and blood were quite sweet owine to their preservation by the borax. This incident led to au investigatiou of the properties of borax and its final adoption by the medical faculty as an antiseptic agent of great value. ' .
