Secretary Gardner repotts tbat there are 50(5,77!) families in Michigan, and the average uurnuer belouging to each is 4.42. There are 23,094 'more families than dwellings. The nurnber of families increased 118,031 from 1890 to 1896, and 51,775 from 1890 to 1894. In 1850 the average mimber of persons per family was 5.48, deoreasing gradually to 4.42 at tbis time. There are 182,409 families iu inoorporated cities. The average nnmber to a family there is 4.50; in the country, 4.88. The nnmber of dwellinprs in the state is reported at 483,085. Tbe total popnlation is 2,241,641, an average of 4.68 persons to each dweiling. There are 15,233 dwellings occupied by une person and 792 by 2) persons and over.
