Chicago, March 30. - Tn an explosión in the new northwest land tunnel at the foot of Oak street two men were killed and four others seriously injured at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning. The names of the dead men are: Owen OMalley and Peter Gallagher. The injured ones are: Thomas Gallagher, 2941 B:iias court, badly bunied about the face and arms; Dennis Hayes. burned about the face and back; PatrickConway,Bridgeport avenue, near Archer avenue, slightly burned; unknown man, slightly burned about the face and hands. Eleven irten were working in tne tunnel 2,300 feet under the lake. William Ennis was foreman. An unusually heavy blast had been prepared by the men and the work had been safely accomplished. The fuse had been lighted and the warning given the men ,to get at a safe distance. O'Malley and Gallagher stayed behind for an instant and were within but a few feet when the explosión occurred. .Literauy ïtiown n rieces. They received the full force of the blast and were literally blown to pieces. Hayes, Conway, and Thomas Gallagher had run a considerable distance when the explosión carne and ordinarily would have been out of reach of the force of the blast. This time, however, the flying rocks and debris seemed to have more than ordinary force, and besides being burned by the explosión, they were crushed and bruised by the heavy stones and masses of clay. The injured men were immediately taken to the Passavant hospital. The bodies of Gallagher and O'Malley were taken fo Bolston's morgue, 11 Ada.ms street. A report of the disaster was sent to the office of the city engineer, and General Fitzsimrnons hurried to the city hall. His compariy has the contract for the work.
