A woman's silent influonee on the affairs of a naticm is shown in the oareer of Mrs. Gladstone. She is not a social or political leader, ñor iu any way a diplo mat iu petticoats. She is responsable, however, far more than is generally known, not only for hcr husband's vigoróos health at his ripe oíd age, btit also for liis grcat ability to accomplish the amcrant of work he lias done through his publio life and since his retiremeut. When he was iu office, it was her ceaseless care that he should uot be distracted by anything that she conld prevent, ■words that meant reinarkable self abnegatiou. The iuterests of a growing f arnily of Beven children, with a fond aud proud mother, might easily have made considerable demand upou the father'a attention, but neither this nor any social duties, nor any honsehold perplexities, were ever permitted to touch his leisure f rom statecraf t cares. Her watchfulness has not decreased these later years. She is still his best physician and saves his strength in innumerable vays, trifling in theniselves, but important in the aggregate and possible only to one who has made such saving a life study. Blessed herself with excellent health all her life, she wears her 83 years lightly, aud still shows many traces of the-handsome Miss Glynne who captivated the rising young M. P. over half a century ago.
