The closing party of the Thursday Evening Club at Grangers' academy last evening was one of the jolliest gatherings that ever' assemblee} there, abüut 70 people being present. Last year the gentlemen of the party fixed up a seríeme on the ladies and at tbe last meeting of the class appeared on the floor in rather novel party dress. Last night tbe ladies got back at them, bowever, and even weut them one better. About 8 :45 a loug line of "yellow kids" issued from tbe dressing room marebiug to the tap of a drum oarried by "Til, the painter," and bearing banuers on whioh were insnribed "Hurrah for Hogan's alley, " "We are the rnayor's friends, " and "We are the ouly pebbles on the beach." After a short grand maroh dancing was commenoed and tbe puzzled gentlemen were so mystifled by the strange yellow dresses and piuk headgear of tbe ladies that they could not teil their own wives or partners, the result was any amount of fun which kept up until 10 o'olock when the masks were dropped and most of the ladies appeared in their regular costumee. Later in the evening they again surprised the boys with a substantial lunch and after that had been disoussed still further surprised them with an April box of cigars made specially for the occasion. Most of the smokers thonght they were pretty greeu and one said tbe ladies must have boiled them, but tbey were scarcely prepared for the result of the internal investigation of the "smokers" whioh showed them to be filled with a good grade of clover 'hay. Three cheers were given the ladies for tbeir clever surprises and then dancing was resumed and kept up until 1 o'clock when all went home vowing it was the jolliest party they had been to in years.
