General orders No. 3 relatiug to Memorial Day services has been issued from departnaent headquarters by Oonimander Aarou T. Blies to all the ö'. A. R. posts in the state and is as follows: Again the living approach the day most sacred to the Union Arrny veterau. Lot it be the parpóse of each survivor of that arniy to rnake Memorial Day of 189", in its observance, most impressive. Cali toyour active co-operation on the ocoasion that noble, self-saorificing body of womeu, the Woman's Relief Corps. They are our right arm and they always respond to our cali. The Sons of Veterans, too, our own flesh and blood, will be found ready to join in the duties of the day. To all citizenB give moat sinoerely cordial invitation to participate in the Memorial exercises, and to observe the day by laying aside all business cares. Especially invite the sohool childreu to be vith you, that the lessons of the hour may impress their young hearts with the sadness of the objects that cali for the obsarvance of tbe day. They are in the future, perhaps, to be the ones who shall soatter sweet blossoms of springtime over our resting spots. Comrades, let us well keep iu mind the sacred nature of Memorial Day, and use all proper measures to prevent its being made a season for gaiety aud sports. Let no spot where rests the remains' of our uatiou's héroes, our soldier dead, be forgottou on this day, if within your power to prevent. The 30th of May, 1897, falling on Sunday, it is provided by statute law of our state that the followiug Monday be observed iu business matters as a legal holiday. In view of this fact Monday, May 31st, 1897, has been named as Memorial Day in this department and it is hoped that the observance of that day may occur in all localities where previously made arrangements do not prevent. A beautiful custom of onr order is the attending of divine services at some church by posts ia a body on the Suuday preceding Memorial Day. This year such service sbould come upon Sunday, May 30. Let this custom be generally observed. Where no post is escablisbed see that tbe clergy are speoially invited to bold memorial exercises either in union or seperate servioe. The reading of Lincolu's Gettysburg address on Memorial day as a part of the Memorial day exercises was recorumended by the 30th National Encamproent. The Posts of this department will see tbat this recommendation is observed.
