At the meeting of the board of re gents of the university held Wednes day every member was in attendance Tbe attention of the board was largely directed towards a consideration of the budget for next; year. Votes of thanks were tendered Prof. W. J. Beal, of the State Agricnltural college, and Mr. George H. Hicks, of the department Dl agrionlturei for their donations oi sbrnbs andseeds for tbe new botanioal garden. A vote of thanks was also given to the Mabarajah of Jeypore, Rajpntna, India, who recently sent to tbe library six portfolios of arobiteotural drawings. The number of hours work reqaired for gradnation froro the engineering department was raised from 120 to 130. This change will go into effeot with the next entering olass. Two of the ten additional hours will be devoted to the stndy of English. The remaiuing eight hours will be divided between mathematical and professional studies with a view to keeping them np todate as new branches are developed. One additional instructor in engineering was grantec for next year. Dean Greene explainec the falling off in attendanoe in this department as due to a Jack of rnoney for advertising. Harry O. Severance was appointec general assiatant in the library for 1897-98 at a salary of $700.
