Few women ontside of royalties ever "popped the question" to a man, and .perhaps only one has had the experienoe of being rejected by a man without having proposed to hini. There was one, and the Hon. L. A. Tollemache tells the story in his "Persoual Mernoir of Benjamin Jowett, " rnaster of Balliol, Oxford. The master's personality was potent and penetrating, and good women feit its fascination. Au undergraduate was ill at Balliol college, and his sister, coming to Oxford to nurse hirn, was invited by Dr. Jovvett to stay at his house. She received frora him the utmost kindness and attention, and when leaving said, with rauch , hesitation, that she would venture to ask a very great favor. She again hesitated. The master grew uneasy and looked interrogativo. "Will you marry me?" at last she asked. He paced up and down, blushed deeply, and replied, "That would uot be good either f or you or f or me. ' ' "Oh, oh!" exclaimed theyoung lady, blushing even more deeply. "I meanl to say I am going to be married ano would you perform the service?" Sh( had been refused, poor girl, without having proposed.
