The journal of tne last session was approved. PETITIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS. TROM THB BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS. To the Common Council: The Board of Public Works would respectfnlly recommed that the contract for building the sevver in sewer district No. 6 be awarded to Schneider Bros. they being the lowest bidders for such work. Glen V. Mills, Clerk of the Board of Public Works. Aid. Koch moved that the recommendation of the Board be concurred in by the Council. Adopted as follows: Yeas- Aid. Mooie, Hamilton, Koch, Dell, Sweet, Brown, Vandawarker, Rhodes, Spathelf, Danforth, Cady, Pres. Luick- 12. Nays- None. To the Common Council. The Board of Public Works would respeetfully refer to your honorable body the estímate of the City Engineer for Extendingtheculvert on Spring st. at..$ 65 00 Filling in the Hunter Pond on Washing st 315 00 the curbing on S. üniversity ave 105 00 and would recommend that the same be concurred in by the Council. The Board of Public Works respeetfully presents for your consideration the estímate of the Engineer for reconstructing the outlet of the Main Sewer for $.575.00 and respectfuily request tbat you make the necessary appropriation to do the work from the General Sewer Fund. To the City of Ann Arbor and the Mayor and Oommon Counèil thereof: Whereas, at a meeting of the directors of The New State Telephone Cömpany held at the city of Detroit on the fourth day of June 1897, a quorum of said board being present, it was resolved as follows: ''Resolved, by the board of directors of the New State Telephone Company that said company accept the provisions of an ordinance adopted by the Common Council of the City of Ann Arbor and approved by the Mayor thereof on the seventh day of May 1897, entitled "An Ordinance authorizing the construction, maintenance and Operation of an electric telephone exehange within the city of Ann Arbor5 and that the President of this company be and is hereby directed to execnte on behalf of the company and under its seal an aeceptance in writing which shali be flled with the clerk of said city." New in pursuence of said resolution the said New State Telephone Company hereby accepts the terms and provisions of the ordinance mentioned and referred to in said resolution. A petition signed by John Mayer and twelve others asking tor a sidewalk on S. Seventh st. was read and referred to the Sidetvalk Committee. A petition signed by John Kapp and ten others asking for that portion of Main st. between Williams and Liberty being placed in a separate paving district was read and ordered filed. A petition signed by M. J. Cavanaugh and nine others asking for the improvement of Wilmot st. was read and referred to the Street Committee. A petition signed by W. P. Flynn and nine others asking for the pavement of the gutter on N. -Fifth ave. was read and referred to the Street Committee. A petition signed by H. J. Brown and one hundred and twenty others protesting against the building of a store front into the street was read and referred to the Sidewalk and Ordinance Committees and City Attorney. REPOKT OF STANDING COMMITTEES. ORDINANCE. Chairman Cady presented the ordinance eutitled "An Ordinance Relative to the Pavement of Streets" which was given its third reading by sections. Aid. Dell moved that the ordinance be redrawn upon the foot frontage plan. Adopted as follows: Yeas - Aid. Moore, Hamilton, Dell, Vandawarker, Rhodes, Spathelf, Danforth, Cady, Tres. Luick- 9. Nays-Ald. Koch. Sweet, Brown- 3. Aid. Hamilton moved that the City pave the street intersections and onefouth of the remainder. Aid. Koch moved as an amendment that the City pave the street intersections and one-fifth of the remainder. Adopted as follows: Yeas- Aid. Koch, Dell, Sweet, Brown, Rhodes, Sathelf, Danforth, Cady, Pres. Luick - 9. Nays- Aid. Moore, Hamilton, Vandawarker- 3. Aid. Hamilton moved that the ordinance be referred to the Ordinance Committee. Adopted as follows: Yeas- Aid. Mooie, Hamiltou, Koch, Dell, Sweet, Brown, VaDdawarker, Rhodes, Spathelf, Danforth, Cady, Pres. Luick - 12. Nays- None. To the Common Council. Your Committee on Straets would recommend that the A. A. & Y. Electric Railway Company be directed within ten days to fill between their tracks and eighteen inches on each side of the tracks on Packard from the junction to the city limits. In case the work is not begun within flve days after service of this resolution that the Street Commissioner be instructed to do sueh grading, and the expense for the same charged up against said A. Your Committee on Streets would recommedn that the Board of Public Works be instructed to scrape off the mud, grade up and roll División st. from ïluron to Packard, also Packard from State to the junction. And f urther your Committee would recommend that the gutter on the north side of Hill be paved from Packard st. to the eulvert and on the south side of Felch from Main to the eulvert. And further that another twelve inch tile be laid across S. Fifth ave on the south side of Williams and on the east side of Third along the Beyer property corner Williams st. To the Common Council: Your Committee on Streets would recommend that $100.00 be appropriated from the Street Fund to complete the grading on Broadway and graveling between Mili st. and the culvert. Your Committee on Sidewalks ■would recommend that plank sidewalks be ordered built and constructed on the following streets and in front of the following property, viz: On the west side of E. University Ave. between Brown's south line and Tappan street. On the north side of Catherine from the hospital walk to Observatory. And that the following sidewalks be repaired: , On the south side of Madison between Main and 5th Ave. On the west side of Hanover Square along the Richardson property. On the north side of E. Jefferson in front of 21 and on the south side in front of 28, 30, and 34. On the south side of S. University Ave in front of 44 and between East University ave. and Church st. In front of 1 and 16 Observatory st. In front of 28 S. División st. In front of 48 E Ann st., property of Wm. Payne. Respectfuliy submitted, P. M. Hamilton, H. P. Your Committee on Sidewalks are oí the opinión that the grade of the, sidewalk on and along the north side of Wall street from east line of Broadway to the west line of Huron river and on the east side of Ooservatory from north line of Geddes Ave., to the north line of Forest Hill cemetery ought to be changed and fixed and establisned and herewith submit the proper resolutions fixing and establishing the same. -Kespecmiuy suomittea, P. Whereas, in the opinión of the Council the grade of the sidewalk on the east side of Observatory-st., ought to be changred and fixed and established, to the end that swch street may be suitable for public travel. Therefore, Resolved, and it is hereby ordered that the grade of the sidewalk on and along the east side of Observatory-st., f rom north line of Geddesave., to the north line of Porest Hill cemetery be, and the same is hereby changed, fixed and estabiished, so that the grade of said sidewalk on and along tbe street aforesaid shajl be as follows, that is to say: At the N. line af Geddes ave. .904.50 ft. At 275 ft Dorth of the N. line of Geddes Ave 908.00 ft. At 375 ft north of N. line of Geddes Ave 908 00 ft. At 425 ft north of N. line of Geddes Ave 907.00 ft. At 475 ft. north of N. line of Geddes Ave 905.50 ft. At 525 ft. north of N. line of Geddes Ave 903.00 ft. At 575 ft. north of N. line of Geddes Ave. 901.00 ft. At 625 ft north of N. line of Gsddes Ave 900 50 ft. At 760 ft north of N. line of Forest Hill cemetery 901.50 ft. The elevation given being above the official city datum and along the center line of such walk, and the grade lines to consist of straight lines between the several points or stations above stated. Whereas, in the opinión of the Council the grade of the sidewalk on the north side of Wall St., ought to be changed and fixed and estabiished, to the end that such street may be suitable for public travel. Therefore Resolved, and it is hereby ordered tliat the grade of the sidewalk on and along the north side of Wall street from east line ot Broadway to the west line of Huron river be, and the same is hereby changed, tixed and estabiished, so that the grade of said sidewalk on and along the street aforesaid shall be as follows, that is to say: At N. E. cor Broadway and Wall St 774.20 ft. At 50 ft east from N. E. cor Broadway and Wall St 772.00 ft. At 250 ft east from N. E. cor Broadway and Wall 'St 768.00 ft. At 650 ft east from N. E. cor Broadway and Wall St 763.00 ft. At 850 ft east from N. E. cor Broadway and Wall St 762.50 ft. At 1515 ft east from N. E. cor Broadway and Wall St 756.00 ft. the elevation given being above the official city datum and along the center line of such walk, and the grade lines to consist of straight lines between the severa) points or stations above stated. To the Common Council : Your-Committee on Sidewalks would recommend that a plank crosswalk be ordered repaired across 6th on the south side of Jefferson. Your special Committee on gravel would recommend that the City purchase gravel oí J. J. Ellis estáte on Mosley Street, and Daniel Hiscook on Spring street at 10 cents per load, and that the pit in the line of Pontiaestreet be worked. Your Special Committee would most respectfully request your honorable body to give them an honorable discharge from further duty. Resolved that the Board of Public Works ask for bids for 2,600 feet of maple lumber íor a fioor in the Pire Department. Adopted. By Aid. Moore. Resolved that the City Engineer be ordered to submit profiles with Street and Sidewalk Grade resolutions. Adopted as follows: Yeas- Aid. Browm moved that the City Engineer be instructed to prepare a sidewalk grade on the southwest side of Washtenaw Ave. and from S. University Ave. to Hill and on the north side of Hill from Washteuaw Ave. to J. C. Knowlton's east line. Adopted. Aid. Koch moved that the City Engineer prepare a Street and Sidewalk grade for W. Madison street. Adopted. Aid. Koch moved that the attention of the Board of Public Works be called to the resolutkm of the Council relative to the employmeut of labor. Adopted. Aid. Hamilton moved that Mrs. Ann Evans be allowed $5.00 per month from the Poor Fuad. Aid. Rhoáes moved as an amendment that the subject be referred to the Poor Committee. Lost as follows : Yeas- Aid. Brown moved to amend Section 9 of the Plumbing Rules of the City of Ann Arbor by cutting out the following : The applicant at the time of making the said application, shall also pay into the city treasury the sum of $2.00 as a tappae and inspection fee, and the city clerk is hereby empowered and instructed to receive the same and issue a receipt therefor.
