Memphis, Tenn., July 20.- Governor Taylor has appointed Thomas B. Turley of Memphis, United States senator to succeed the late Senator Harris. In an interview with the governor immediately af ter the appointment he said: "I have chosen Mr. Turley because I wanted to honor the memory of Isham fi. Harris. I have chosen him because of his prominent ability and fitness for the position of United States senator. I have chosen him to represent all the people of Tennessee, but in so doing I feit it my duty to make the selection from the grand división of the state from which the dead senator was elected." When questioned as to the tariff Senator Turley said that he had not studied the bill technically, but that upon the question of tariff he is as near a free trader as it is possible to be. lïeferring to the differences of opinión which have developed among Deinocrats in the discussion of the present bill, he said that he is strictly in accord with Democratie declarations through a long series of years and is in favor of tariff for revenue only. The senator preferred not to express an opinión regarding Cuba, believing that the question would not again den.and the attention of the entire session of congress. On the financial question. Mr. Turley is strictly in line with the recent Chicago platform.
