From the annual report of the Superintendent of the Poor for Washtenaw Connty to the seoretary of state is gleaned the following items of iniormation : The whole number of paupers cared for at the county house during the year ending June 30,1897, was 78. Of these there were 56 males and 22 females, the average number cared for each day being 45. Of those were insane 1, idiotie 4, blind 2, mute 3. Giving as American all whites bom in this oonntry, no matter of what descent, the nationality is given as American 37, English 8, Irish 15, Afrioan (mulatto) 4, Italian 1. During the year there were 10 deaths and no burials, the oorpses being taken to Ana Arbor. In one instance the son and daughter of an old man, wbo were notified of his death and that $10 wonld give him a decent bnrial, neglected to fnrnish the means, and his reamins shared the fate of the others. Tempoarry relief was extended to 805 indigent persoDS. and were permanently maintained outside the uonnty house. The whole amount espended by the connty for alras has been $12,162.29. The oost of maintaining the county house was $3,007.81.
