Fakirs is the name given to a celebrated class of fanática found in many parts of the east, but more particularly in India. Some of them will raake a vow to continue all their lives in one postnre and adhere to it strictly. Others never lie down, but remain in a standing position all their lives, upheld only by sticks or ropes under the armpits. They pretend to have subdued every passion of mortality.
