Returned Evil For Good
Two weeks ago last Honday a man giving bis name as George Downey and claiming to be an actor, stopped at Mrs. Mattie Newman's restanrant on N. Fourth ave., and asked her for something to eat. She told him if he would carry in some wood she had sbe wonld give him his breakfast and if he wonld split it she wonld pay him for it. The bargain was carried ont, bnt Downey still hung aronnd. He claiined to be a cook and as Mrs. Newinan wanted help she gave him money to buy nimself some olean clothes and employed him. He was a remarkably bandy fellow and Mrs. Newmau soon placed great trust in him. Tnesday night he got tired of his job and conclnded to get ont, so after all weve in bed and asleep he took what money was in the cash drawer amoonting to $7.35 and then goiug into the bedroom occnpied by two of Mrs. Newmann's boarders, he stole August Sohaefer's gold watch, chain and overcoat, valned in all at abont $50, and a pair of shoes belonging to a youug I fellow nained Mowers, and forthwith skipped. When Mrs. Newmann got up at 6:30 a. m. she discovered the fellow's sbseuoe also the losses that bad been sustained. Sheriff Judson and Marshal Sweet were both informed of the atiair and official inquiry was started but np to the present no Downey has been se cured.
