March 30, 1898. lo the Honorable the Common Council of the City of Ann Arbor: I beg to return herewith without my approval an Ordi nance passed March 2l,1898,entitled an vlOrdinancechanging the name of Oxford st. to Oxford Itoad." Section 126 of the Charter in speaking of the highways of the city does not recognize the woid road and the highways of tbis city have alwaya been known as streets or avenues and I do not see the necessity of this chaiige as it appears to be an attempt to adopt the customs of foreign couutries and if allowed to pass we can reasonably expect similar petitious asking changes to Pall Mali, ünter den Linden or Bois de Boulogne, etc. I do not uuderstand there is any law preventing a citizen trom calling his residence a croft, eastle or roost, but we do control the public highways and I protest against this innovation and hope they may be allowed to retain the names by which they have alwajs been knowu and designated. CnAS. E. IIiscoctv, Mayor, The Ordinance failed of passage the veto of the mayor notwithstanding aa follows: Yeas- Aid. Hamilton, Dell, Sweet, Brown, Spathelf, Coon, Danforth, Cady- 8. Nays- Aid.
