Baltimore American: The sale of a. copy of the flrst edition of the works of Robert Burns, in Edinburgh recenty, for over $2,800, was an event which calis up m&ny interesting thoughrts. During his life Burns was never a great financial success. He started for America, hoping to escape his debts, but the success of the first edition of his books changed his plans. He stood lt out in his own country, aad did his share ín the consumption of hot and cold scotches. In that land he received a place paying him the munjficent salary of $200 a year, and this was afterward increased to $325, which was so extravagant that it never went any higher. It all showed what beautiful Scotland thought of its greateat poet. And now one of the little books brings about as much as Burns made in hls whole lifetime. Great poets ought to have two Uves. A hundred years after they die amid poverty tkey ought to be allowed to come back and enjoy the profits of their matured f ame.
