On Wednesday George E. Smitb, the renowned chicken thief, wbo was arrested in Detroit by Detective Tnttle, was bronght before Jnstice Duffy, oharged with stealing about $3,000 worth of chickens in the townships of York aud Lima. six years ago. Charles Clark, of York, being the principal loser. Detectives Tnttle and Lally, of Detroit, are both well acquainted with Smith's record as a obicken thi3f, and were present at the examination. They stated that Smith had served 00 days in Pontiao, one year in the Toronto prison - all for stealing cihckens. Smith is a man about 45 or 50 years of age, has a withered right hand and sneaky eyes, bat is abont the last ruan in the world an uususpecting person wonld think coald develop into a flrstolass rasoal. He had jnst got out of eerving a term in the Toronto prison when he was arrested in Detroit by Detective Tnttle, having come ovar thcre to see his danghter. Smitb waived examination and will be eenteced at tbis term of court provided he pleads gnilty. If he does not sopead his case will go over to the October term of oonrt and be will have to stay in jail uutil then.
