It seems incredlble that so small and harmless an animal as a mouse Is able to frighten an elephant almost out of its senses. One llttle mouse in the hay on which they are feeding will stampede an entire herd. In their nativa land there are llttle animáis, known as chacanas, w&lch feed on a small, aour berry of which elephants are very fond. They live In settlements, somethlng after the manner of prairie dogs, under the berry bushes. When feeding, the elephants trample the Httle towns, and the chacanas, in their frlght, run up the tabea of the elephants' trunks. Their long, sharp clawa catch in the fleah, and they cannot be ejected. The more vlolenUy the monster blows through its coiled trunk the more firmly the hooked claws of the llttle animal become lmbedded in the fiesh. Inflammation and death are the result.
