A friend oí Arnold Bocklin relates that when that eminent artist vvas quite a young man he married a Roman girl, beautiful and accomplished, but as poor as the yonng artist. Their daily meal of ten consisted of a pot of beans. Yet the artist would not sacrifico his ideáis for any sum of money. One time he painted a landscape for a wealthy Germán merchant, who, as the prospectivo owner of the picture, asked him to make certain changes in it. This the bean eating painter refused to do, though the price offered him for thealtered picture was nearly $1,000.
