There were 51 prosecutions during June in this state for violations of the ñeh and game laws. Gov. Pingree told the 31st regiment that it was the best regiment he had seen. We wonder what he told the other regiments. It has been said that Lieut. Hobson is a corker. Through no fault of his, towever, the cork didn't stay in the mouth of Santiago harbor. Don Pingree is a Spanish sympathjzer. At least he rails at American methods and predicts American deieat just like any full-fledged don. Hobson is free. He and his seven brave seamen have been exchanged for Spanish officers and prisoners and are now with the American forces. Hurrah for Hobson. These timid peace lovers, peace at any price, who predicted the bombardjneut of American cities, are asked to point out what Spain has left to bombard with. Trom now on, as trom the beginning Spain must be on the defensive. _______ Sunday seems to be a great day for the American navy. On Sunday Dewey sank Montejo's Spanish fleet, another Sunday Sehley sank Cervera's fleet. Dewey lost not a man killed and Sehley lost only one killed. These victories are without parallel in naval annals. The Hawaiian Islands will be part of the United States as soon as President McKinley signs the joint resolutions passed by Congress. This is as it should be. Xext let Cuba, Port Bico, the Phillipine Islands, the Ladrone Islands and the Caroline Islands become part of the United States. Let the new watchword be the building np of an extensive commerce. Spain had three fleets. Two of them are now submarine fleets, and the third ís hovering about the Suez canal hardly kcowing whether it is best to sail to meet Dewey's reception, which would be a warm one or to return to Spain to await Watson's American fleet, which 'will soon carry the war into Spain. Unless she sues for peace soon, Spain may have a third submarine fleet. Gov, Pingree has discharged the 13inch gun of criticism at the President for appointing sons of illustrious men to positions in the army. But it is now given out that two sons of Col. .Atkinson, the Governor's right hand man, are to be given commissions in the new Thirty-fiftb Michigan regiment. One is to be a captain, and the other, a lad of 18, to be a lieutenant.- .Lansing Journal. 3By their conduct at Santiago the troops under Shafter's command have proved that neither Wellington nor Grant nor Lee ever commanded men superior to them in devotion, intelligence and dogged courage. Amidst our sorrow for those who have fallen in this battle for human liberty we have the consoling eonsciousness that it is an army of dauntless héroes that Jjas carried our flag up to the gates of Santiago. Michigan Uuiversity last year stood second in attendance of American universities, being exceeded only by Harvard. It was thirteenth in the xiumber of instructors employed. It is eighth in the number of volumns in its library, being exceeded only by Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania and Columbia, the youngest of which is 83 years older than Michigan. It is eighth in the amount of its income. The cost to the student here averages less per year than at any other of the larger colleges of the country.
