It Was All In The Firm
Drexel & Maul used to be the leading firm of undertakers in Omaha, Drexel was a democrat and Maul a republican. The votes in the town were very close, and each man was popular wlth his party. Every year Drexel would be nominated by the democrats for coronar and Maul by the republicans. The fees of the coroner's office were not large, but it was the morgue, and the undertakers always buried the bodies that were brought there. It didn't make any difference who was elected, as the firm got the profits anyway. Yet the contests used to be as flerce as any carried on in the town. Each candidato would take the stump and deory the other's ability. "It's just like this.' said Drexel one day. "If Mike Maul is elected 111 have to buy all hia clothes for the next year. If I'm elected he'll have to buy mine. That is the reason why I want to beat him." As a matter of fact, each one spent much more in his cainpaign than the clothes would cost.
